About carol . . .

My name is Carol Cahoon and I am excited to have been elected for School Trustee in Coquitlam in November 2014!

I've lived with my husband in the district for 18 years with our two fantastic children, both currently students in School District  No. 43 .

For the past nine years, our children have attended public school in the district, which encompasses the cities of CoquitlamPort Coquitlam, Port Moody, and villages of Anmore and Belcarra.  During this time, I have served on the Parent Advisory Committee (PAC) and School Planning Committee (SPC) at schools in both Port Coquitlam and Coquitlam.  In addition, I was a school liaison and elected the Chairperson of The Coquitlam Montessori Society (CMS) which has classrooms in schools across the district.  All these volunteer positions gave me added experience  working on balancing budgets, raising funds, promoting programs and observing first hand how important good fiscal management is. A School Trustee's responsibility includes the execution of total fiscal accountability for the management of public funds in a responsible and open manner.

In the position of Chairperson on the CMS, I enjoyed leading a group of other volunteer parents and we spent an entire school year inventorying equipment in 28 Montessori classrooms across the district. With the goal of enhancing accountability in CMS for the three hundred thousand dollars of existing inventory as well as future purchases. Our goal was achieved and we ensured that every classroom was fairly equipped, and every child has access to the same equipment regardless of their classroom or school.  The result was the creation of a better informed and fiscally responsible Non Profit Society.

I believe all children should receive an excellent education, no matter which public program they are in, and have a sense of belonging and inclusion. Every child should be treated fairly and have equal representation for their educational needs. Children should not suffer because of insufficient funding or inadequate support.

Continuing to strengthen the public education system is my priority.  I offer my experience and enthusiasm to SD43's Board of Education as a School Trustee, and I will dedicate myself to ensure children receive the highest quality public education available.

Thank you for your support November 15, 2014.
